It would have been a challenge to wipe the beaming smile off the face of Scarborough Athletic boss Rudy Funk after Tuesday evening’s 5-0 thrashing of Lincoln Moorlands Railway.

Funk was delighted by every aspect of a victory that pushed his team back to the summit of the NCEL Premier table.

“It was a very pleasing performance against a young side, who will be a force in the future if they stick together,” said Funk.

“If it finished in double figures then I don’t think anyone would have complained too much.

“I underlined before the game that I wanted to see some decent passing and movement. At times both of these factors were unbelievable, but there is still more to come.

“Eventually my aim is for us to become a crowd-pleasing team. The fans joined in during this game and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

“Every player we brought into the club was hand-picked. We wanted quality, but we didn’t want any bad eggs.

“That has helped the team to gel so quickly because everyone enjoys each other’s company.”

Funk had some special words for winger Robbie Hawkes, who at times was in unplayable form.

He added: “Robbie was superb. He gives us a totally different dimension because you can play him on the left, the right and up front.

“As well as being a good player, he is a great lad among the lads, which is exactly what you need.”
