Funk keen to avoid Ashington slip-up

Scarborough Athletic boss Rudy Funk is looking to avoid a banana skin tomorrow when his side travel to Ashington in the FA Cup.

Boro beat the Northumbrian outfit in the same competition last season by a 4-0 scoreline, a result Ashington will obviously be keen to put right.

Funk is quietly confident though, as he will have a full squad to pick from if Steve Ridley and Ryan Williams can pass their late fitness tests.

Funk said: “We had a blip at Ossett Town in midweek. That happens, but now we are looking to put that behind us.

“Because of that there is no better time for the FA Cup to come around.

“These games are very special for players, the fans and the club as a whole.

“Everyone gets a bit more excited about this competition.

“It won’t be easy for us because Ashington will make it very hard.

“We beat them 4-0 last season, but there have been big changes at the club since then and they will obviously be keen to get a result.”

One player who won’t be making the trip to Ashington is midfielder Kieran McCaffrey, who has made the switch to Brigg Town.

Funk added: “I have had a good chat with Kieran and he has decided to move on.

“He is working nights so he has found it hard to get to training and games.

“He is a smashing lad and a good player, who still wants to turn out for this club, but he knows that his chances will be limited.

“Because of that he has moved to Brigg due to the fact that it is right on his doorstep.”
