Scarborough Athletic have announced the signings of three new players, while they have also secured the services of three of their top players ahead of their debut campaign in the Evo Stik Premier North.

Boss Rudy Funk has brought in Barton Town midfielder Louis Kirk and James Bennett has returned for a second spell at the club, while former loan signing Sam O’Malley has signed on a permanent basis.

In addition to the three new signings, defender Matty Plummer, Chris Bolder and in-demand winger Jordan Thewlis (pictured) have also committed to the Queensgate club for the coming season, much to the delight of chief Funk.

The Romanian boss said: “We’re starting to get everything geared up for the new season now and we’ve started talking to players about next year.

“We’ve got the first batch sorted and they’ve committed their future to Scarborough Athletic, which is great for the club.

“We will now work on the next group of players and keep working towards our squad for the new season.

“We’re obviously restricted to the times we can speak to the players so these things take time.”

Funk is delighted with the acquisition of striker O’Malley, who joined Boro on loan from Grimsby Town earlier this season and returns on a permanent basis after his release from the Mariners.

He added: “I’m absolutely delighted that Sam has signed on for Scarborough Athletic.

“He enjoyed his loan spell with us and now he’s committed to the cause for next year.

“We’ve got a lot of striking options at the club and we need to speak to Grant Ryan, Ryan Blott and Gary Bradshaw yet, but Sam is a good young player and I’m delighted he’s signed for us.”

Funk revealed there was a lot of interest in winger Thewlis, but he was happy to stay with Athletic. “There were a lot of clubs after the services of Jordan but when I spoke to him he had no hesitation in signing for us again,” added Boro manager Funk.

The manager is also happy to have acquired the services of Barton man Kirk.

Funk added: “He is an attacking midfielder who is composed on the ball and will bring a lot to the side, so I’m pleased to have brought him in.”

Funk expects more announcements to be made next week as he looks to build up his playing squad ahead of their venture into the Evo Stik Premier North.
