Hughes and fellow joint-boss Paul Foot have been concerned that a lack of fight has crept into his side once they concede, which is something the pair immediately plan to eliminate.

Departing player Dominic Rowe is one player that Hughes felt lacked the fight during his short spell at the club.

Hughes said: “Dominic was approached by them and his performances have been very indifferent. He hasn’t shown the potential he holds.

“He started the season in the team, but when it got tough he showed that he didn’t have the fight for it.

“We took him out of the team and asked him to give his all from the bench, but he still looked half-hearted, which isn’t what we are after.

“We wish Dominic all the best though with his new club.”

He added: “We need to get that winning habit back and I know the lads are all up for that challenge.

“The soft belly that we had at parts of last season has crept back in, which is something we need to shake off.

“If we concede first then we don’t seem to have it in us to react and bounce back.

“Last season we had a clean-sheet mentality, which we prided ourselves on.

“Clean-sheets win you games because it gives you the solid foundation to push on from.

“You have to earn the right to play and earn the right to win the game.

“In some games this season you can see us downing tools after conceding and saying that it is just going to be another one of those games.

“Instead of that we have to roll our sleeves up and fight. That is what the fans want to see and that is what Paul and I want to see on the touchline.

“We are working hard on that in training this week, they will be putting the hard yards in to get things right.

“We will have to if we are going to get anything from the Mossley game because they are a side that will work their socks off.”

Boro will have Joel Dixon and Steve Mallory in the squad once again after their return to availability, while loanees Isaac Assenso and Ben Hirst may also be in line for a start.

Question marks have been raised over the fitness of Paul Robson and Joe Fox, who both recently picked up injuries.
