Teenage striker Luke Jones smashed in a hat-trick as Scarborough Athletic Reserves earned a 6-2 victory at Long Riston.

Steve Brennan’s side, who are hunting for promotion from the Humber Premier League first division took an early lead through leading scorer Eric Hall, who tapped in from close-range.

The home team levelled with a free-kick which floated over the visiting keeper Rory Skelton.

After the half-time break, Jones opened his account with a neat finish after fine approach play from strike-partner Hall.

Riston levelled again, and it was a set-piece that proved crucial once more, Skelton saving another free-kick, but this time the home forward headed into the net from the rebound.

Jones’ second goal made it 3-2, the striker side-footing his shot past the Riston keeper.

Boro gave themselves some breathing space with a fourth goal from the penalty spot, centre-back Adam Yhklef smashing home his third spot-kick of the season after Hall had been brought down in the area.

Jones then completed his hat-trick with a superb lifted finish after beating the defence to leave him one-on-one with the home keeper.

Boro saved their best until last, with right-sided midfielder Dan Baldry gaining possession on the halfway line, cutting inside and smacking a powerful shot into the roof of the net.

Brennan said: “Luke deserved the plaudits as he was on top form in front of goal.

“He has played well this season but until Saturday he was not getting the luck in front of goal so it was good to see him get three at Riston.

“If we are to gain promotion this season we need Luke to get among the goals like this as it will relieve the pressure on our leading goalscorer Eric Hall.”

Boro Reserves are in action at Withernsea this Saturday.
