Defender Ben Middleton and lively attacker Alex Metcalfe have been the first Scarborough Athletic players to commit for the new season.

Players’ player of the year Middleton turned down Conference North side North Ferriby United, while Metcalfe has also shunned a number of advances from other clubs.

Joint-boss Paul Foot is now hoping for a number of other players from last season’s squad to make a commitment over the next couple of days.

He said: “We are obviously delighted that Alex and Ben have chosen to stay with us.

“Ben has had a chat with North Ferriby, so the fact that he has decided to stay just underlines the ambition of this club.

“His progress has been outstanding this season, it showed that by the fact that he was voted players’ player at Friday’s awards night.

“Alex is another player who came to us from a higher level and obviously there have been a number of clubs looking at him.

“These are two young lads who have a bright future in the game, so we are over the moon that they have committed.”
