Middleton’s tough decision to leave Boro

Scarborough Athletic’s departing defender Ben Middleton has revealed that the chance to move up two levels to North Ferriby United was just too good to turn down.

Having said that, the 20-year-old also underlined that it was one of the toughest decision of his career to date.

Middleton burst into the team last term and after over 40 games in the heart of the defence he was rewarded with the young player of the year honour.

“It was such a tough decision for me, but you can’t turn down the chance to move up two levels to the Conference North,” he said.

“It might not work out, but I just had to have a go at it.

“My dream has always been to work my way back into the full-time game. I have to do it now because otherwise it could be too late.

Scarborough picked me up after I was released by York City and I wouldn’t have had the opportunity if it wasn’t for them.

“I know a lot of lads that have come out of being a YT and I would always point them in the direction of Scarborough.”

Middleton is now looking forward to a new life at Ferriby, though he said he would jump at the chance to come back to Boro if things don’t work out.

“I’m excited, but I am very nervous about it because it is unknown territory. I just want to get playing now.

“I have spoken to Paul Foot about it and I haven’t left on bad terms. He said that I just have to ring him if I need any advice or if it doesn’t work out.

“Paul and Bryan (Hughes) have been great to me during my time here and I would like to thank them for that.”
