Newlands close in on title

Newlands placed one hand on the Saturday League first division title on Monday night when they won 7-0 at Whitby Fishermen.

The victory moved Shaun Mancrief’s side three points clear of second-placed Filey Town heading into Saturday’s big meeting between the sides.

If Newlands can avoid a drubbing of 8-0 or more then they will have done enough to retain the silverware they lifted last term.

And they head into the game in confident mood after an assured performance in Whitby.

The game was all-but wrapped up at the break, as Newlands led 5-0. They then finished the job in the second half, led forward by the power of Ryan Cooper and the defensive solidity of Ricky Nock.

Dan Freer and Adam Stride both struck twice, while Chris Dove, Cooper and Jack Hakings chipped in with the others.

Edgehill lined themselves up for a punt at runners-up spot following their 3-1 defeat of Ryedale Sports.

Danny Collins gave Edgehill a half-time lead, but Ryedale scrambled themselves level after the interval.

Tom Scales finished off a one-on-one to restore the Edgehill advantage, before a neat lob from Collins moved the game beyond doubt.

Boss Steve Clegg was impressed with the work-rate of Andy Noon at right-back, while Damien Robinson and the Henderson brothers Lloyd and Kurtis also caught the eye.

In division three, the game between Tennyson and Seamer Reserves wasn’t played due to Tennyson failing to raise a side.
