Opinion: Fickle fans need to think before typing

I think everybody has had their say on the £49million transfer of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool to Manchester City.

Yes, the price is a little steep, but according to the internet, City owner Sheikh Mansour can earn this money between the hours of seven in the morning and two in the afternoon.

Clearly the man can afford it and clearly it is great business by Liverpool.

So you wonder why supposed Liverpool fans have jumped straight on Twitter to dish out some disgusting abuse to a player that has been a key figure for the past few seasons.

Reports have suggested that his daughter was threatened, leading to Merseyside Police launching a full investigation.

It doesn’t matter what Bill Shankly said, it is only a game and it isn’t rocket science to suggest that sometimes in football, players move on.

On a much lesser scale there were murmorings from Boro fans when defender Ben Middleton left the club recently.

Middleton is a player that dropped out of a Football League academy at York and clearly has the ambition to push himself back up there.

So was his switch to North Ferriby - a club playing two divisions higher - such a bad move for him?

According to some Boro fans it was, as they took immediate offence, saying that we shouldn’t have him back because he lacked loyalty.

Ben was as loyal as they come last season when he played over 40 games for the club and turned down the early advances of Ferriby and Ossett Town.

So I’m a little baffled as to why he deserved the verbal from those sitting behind their keyboards.

Maybe things won’t work out for Ben at North Ferriby, but having read these posts or views, would that affect his decision to make a return to Boro?

Neil Redfearn always used to say to me that football is all about opinion and that is so true.

Actually it is only true if people sit down and have a considered think about what they are going to say.

If you’re not going to do that, then don’t bother.
