TITLE rivals West Pier and Eastfield slugged it out in this cracking first division clash, with hosts Pier just edging home despite a second-half rally by the visitors.
The home side bossed the first half, and they took advantage of this superiority with a goal on the half-hour mark.
Excellent work down the left flank by Neil Thomas, finished off with an angled pass, allowed Martin Cooper to fire a precise volley into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
The visitors brought on Drew McCoubrey and Nathan Till at half-time, and this sparked Eastfield into life as they took a grip of the game.
Ten minutes into the second half, defender Ady Blake forced the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.
Eastfield also brought on Liam Salt as they piled the pressure on Pier, but the centre-back pairing of Sam Hyde and Stephen Sheader held firm for the hosts.
Ten minutes from time, Pier struck the decisive blow, Cooper setting up Thomas on this occasion, the latter securing the win for the hosts.
Eastfield continued to dominate possession as they looked for a leveller, but it was Pier who came closest to scoring, Tommy Barker’s shot hitting the woodwork.
Pier boss Andy Spivey said: “We really had to work hard for that win, and the whole team deserves the man-of-the-match award.
“Left-back Mark Tucker deserves special praise though, as he played well for the whole game despite being injured.”
