Pier seal County Cup final spot

Andy Spivey’s men proved just too good for their Scarborough News Saturday League Division One rivals, eventually running out winners by a 4-1 scoreline.

The result was an exact repeat of last weekend’s league meeting between the two sides and left the Pier boss “delighted”.

“County Cup finals don’t come around all too often, so I’m really, really pleased,” Spivey said.

“We know that we will face a tricky tie in the final whoever we end up playing, but it is just fantastic to get there.

“The performance was a bit more convincing than last week, we were excellent in the first period and had pretty much put the game to bed by half-time.

“It was a good display from the whole team, we were solid at the back and created plenty of chances, but Will Jenkinson and Sam Garnett really stood out in the centre of midfield.”

Jenkinson moved Pier ahead with 15 minutes gone, sweeping home after Steve Sheader headed the ball down to him following a corner.

Martin Cooper doubled the lead when he kept his cool to round Whitby keeper Paul Cull and finish off a fine team move.

The same player then took the score to 3-0, 10 minutes before half-time with an almost identical goal.

Billy Logan’s deft chip ended the game as a contest after the break, and although the Fishermen pulled a goal back later on through Mark Swales, it proved too little too late for Mark Storr’s side.

Dave Welham was named as the Whitby outfit’s star performer.

In Division One, Filey Town claimed the local bragging rights when they won 2-0 at home to rivals Hunmanby United.

After an even opening quarter of an hour, Town seized the initiative when Ricky Tomlinson crossed for Phil Dickens to head in.

The hosts took control after this, missing a number of chances to extend their lead before Liam Sugden slotted home following good work down the left flank by former Hunmanby winger Tommy Wilson.

Cameron Dobson twice came close to getting United back into the game after the break, while Filey also created further chances, but there no more goals in the second half.

“I think we were pretty much superior from beginning to end, and I reckon that Hunmanby would agree with that,” Town chief Dave Brannan said.

“The game was quite even to start with, but once we went in front we had a lot of chances.

“James Jenkinson, John Emmerson and Ricky Tomlinson did extremely well, but all the lads played their part.”

Second-placed Edgehill Reserves won 6-1 at Seamer Reserves in Division Two.

Dave Bell opened the scoring from the penalty spot, and Edgehill were 2-0 up when Danny Glendinning picked out the back of the home net.

Bell registered again before the interval, with player-boss Martyn Ferrey coming off the bench in the second half to register numbers four and five.

Nathan Patterson put the finishing touch to a comprehensive victory, with Ferrey praising Bell and Steve Whittaker for their performances in what he described as a “great team display”.

Ali Caw was the man on target for the home side.

Sleights Reserves were 3-0 winners over third division promotion-hopefuls Goal Sports.

The hosts took the lead through Ryan Roe after just 30 seconds and the visitors never recovered.

Simon Taylor registered Sleights’ second of the afternoon, while at the other end, Goal Sports struggled to create many chances of note.

Their best opportunity fell to Niall Prentice early in the second period, but he missed the target with the goal gaping.

The villagers worked hard to ensure a clean sheet for keeper Dave Fish after the break, and young man of the match Taylor Humble put the icing on the cake with a third goal in the closing stages.

Sports boss Mark Plumpton reflected: “This was our worst showing of the season, we didn’t deserve anything from the game.”
