Players gather for reunion

There will be a blast from the past at Scarborough RUFC’s Silver Royd on Saturday as a number of former Scarborough FC players will be taking in the afternoon’s action.

Players and managers from the halcyon days of the club will be in Silver Royd’s funtion room from 12pm and right throughout the day.

Among them will be Alan Franks, Colin Appleton and Jeff Barmby from the FA Trophy finals of the 1970s, as well as Neil Warnock, Kevin Blackwell, Mitch Cook and Stewart Mell from the Conference winning side of 1987.

There will be a smattering of others from throughout the years, including Ted Smethurst, Chris Tate, Jason Rockett, Steve Norris, George Oghani, Gary Bennett, Mark Hotte and Mark Quayle.

Gates open for the Lloyd Dowson and Fusion Resources-sponsored afternoon at 12pm and from 1pm there will be a friendly between Scarborough Athletic under-21s and Hall Road under-19s.

That will be followed at 3pm by the game between Boro and the Saturday League Respresentative side.

Organiser and Scarborough and District League fundraiser Sean Hunter said: “It should be a great afternoon, I’m really looking forward to it.

“It will be good to have all of the players and managers down from the past and to give the fans the chance to mingle with them.

“It is something we might look to do on a regular basis, there is already talk of a golf day at North Cliff before next year’s game.”
