Reserves work hard for opening home success

Boro Reserves secured a hard-fought 3-1 win at Filey Community Sports Club in their first league game of the season against Withernsea.

Boro gave first league starts to summer signings Marc Wain, Wilf Dinsdale, Jonny Morritt, John Price and under-19s player Aidan Thomas.

Boro should have been three up inside eight minutes but Price, Barker and Palmer all wasted excellent chances, before the latter latched onto a through ball and drilled home into the bottom corner to opener the score.

Withernsea weathered the early storm and had a spell of pressure with their direct football style.

They equalised on the half-hour, a neat finish at the back post from a flick on.

The rest of the half was an even contest with neither keeper really tested.

Stern words from the management saw the Reserves come out fighting, epitomised by Wilf Dinsdale and superb young centre-back Jonny Morritt.

Two subs were also made at half-time, changing the game. Luke Foster replaced Aidan Thomas and new signing Wes Owusu went up front in place of Mike Barker.

The Reserves started controlling the game through Owusu but again Price missed two exellent chances created by his strike partner, before the reserves were awarded a penalty when Foster was taken out in the area.

Skipper Reid stepped up but his fierce effort hit the bar and rebounded to safety.

Keeper Wain was rarely tested, but a brilliant blocked save ensured the score stayed 1-1.

Seconds later Price atoned and slammed home inside the box with 15 minutes left.

And as the game got stretched, Foster beat his man and advanced toward the keeper.

He unselfishly laid it off for Price to tap in and give the Reserves a deserved three points against difficult and physical opponents.

Boro Res: Marc Wain; Adam Ykhlef; Dom Richardson; Wilf Dinsdale; Jonny Morritt; Adam Jones; James Palmer; Callum Reid (Shawn Matongo 80); John Price; Mike Barker (Wes Owusu 46); Aidan Thomas (Luke Foster 46).

Unused subs: Jake Acton, James Coupland.
