RUDY FUNK: The future is bright

I heard a few things saying that we are out of the play-off running now so we may as well give up for the rest of the season.

That isn’t the way I do things, we will be playing until the last minute of the final game because we want to finish as high as we can in the table.

We provide football for our supporters so it is very important that we continue to play to the best of our abilities in every game we have left.

As I have said before, this has been a learning curve for us this season because the difference between the NCEL and the Evo-Stik League is like black and white.

We have learned about our new players and we have learned about the players who helped us to the title this season.

It was important to see what they could do at a higher level of football.

Next season will be a difference story. We have to make the neccessary adjustments to the squad, we know what we need to put us in a strong position.

“There is already plenty of movement and intent, but we still have plenty of football left to play this season.

We don’t want to set too many targets for next season, but I can promise that there will be a drastic improvement.

The good thing for our club is the fact that in a year or so we won’t have to go around lining so many new targets up because we will have good young players flowing through.

That will be a testament to the hard work that Nigel Carson and Wendy Danby have done over the past year to set things up for us.

My thanks must also go to the managers of the reserves and right down through to the managers of the youngest sides.

People have asked if I would be giving some of the younger players a chance this season.

I believe that it would have been a foolish move to throw them in there while we were competing for a play-off place.

If anything went wrong then it could have been a set-back for the player rather than a boost.

There are still a few games remaining so there might be the opportunity to give some younger lads the experience of sitting on the bench, which will hopefully enhance their development and progression towards the first team.
