SATURDAY LEAGUE: Pier beat Edgehill to boost title hopes

West Pier kept their Scarborough News Saturday League division one title hopes alive with a thrilling 4-3 win at rivals Edgehill on Monday night, but Newlands seem to be the team on form after their 13-0 win at home to Ayton.

Edgehill took an early 2-0 lead, but Ali Caw gave West Pier hope with a goal on the stroke of half-time.

The hosts restored their two-goal lead advantage after the interval, but Martin Cooper pulled it back to 3-2 with the rebound after his penalty had been saved. The spot-kick was awarded for a foul on Luke Delve.

Pier man of the match Will Jenkinson then levelled the scores from a free-kick, and 15 minutes from time Delve hit the winner, beating the offside trap and finishing neatly. Andy Spivey’s side are now three points behind leaders Filey Town, with both sides having two games left to play.

Lewis Taylor, Phil Warnett and Lloyd Henderson netted for the hosts, with the latter and his younger brother Kurtis impressing for the hosts.

Newlands eased to a 13-0 home win against basement club Ayton, with Dan Freer and Ryan Cooper netting hat-tricks for the hosts.

Sean Exley and Danny Jenkinson scored a brace apiece for the defending champions, who are also now only three points behind Filey, but with a game in hand on the pacesetters.

A Stew Bates double steered Newlands Park Reserves to a 2-1 home win against Athletico2B in division two.

Shaun Dodson scored for the Cats from a fine through-ball by Sam Medd, with centre-back Ben David and central midfielder Jackson Jowett impressing for the visitors.
