Saturday League: Whitby sides share the spoils while Sherburn see off Sleights

Steve Mothersdale’s RUFC side led 1-0 after Chris Charlsworth latched onto a Lewis Peel flick-on a drilled in.

It was 1-1 heading into the interval though, Mark Swales’s free-kick finding the top corner to hand Fishermen’s parity.

Both sides spurned chances to win it after the break and had to settle for a point apiece.

Mothersdale said: “We had eight men missing and a patched up side so I am happy with a point from the game.

“We played well and both sides had chances to win the game, it feels more like a win than a draw to be honest.”

Jordan Purvis stood out for Fishermen’s, while Mothersdale was quick to sing the praises of his entire side.

Sleights battled back and picked up three points as they beat Westover Wasps 4-2.

Kyle O’Toole’s deft lob over the Sleights keeper handed Jamie Heritage’s men the lead, but Sleights netted to ensure the scores were level at the break.

The home side netted twice to take control of proceedings, but Jack McFarlane’s header from a corner made it 3-2 and gave the Wasps hope of applying a sting in the tale.

But the home side weren’t to be denied and netted again to seal the three-point-haul.

Heritage said: “They probably edged it and had the better chances, but it was a much improved performance from us.”

Sixteen-year-old winger Tom Sutherland was Wasps’ man of the match.

In the only fixture to go ahead in Division Two, Edgehill Reserves beat struggling Ayton 3-1.

Tom Scales was in form in front of goal for Martyn Ferrey’s men as he bagged a brace, while Jon Cairns’ strike wrapped up the three points against rock-bottom Ayton.

West Pier v Scalby and Filey Town Reserves v Cayton Reserves were both called off due to no referee being available to take charge of the games.

Goal Sports weren’t at the races and dropped their first points of the season as they drew 2-2 against Hunmanby United Reserves in Division Three.

Niall Prentice’s effort from Dan Pollard’s pass handed Goal Sports the lead, but United scored and were level at the break.

A moment of madness from Goal Sports keeper Tom Peacock turned the tide of proceedings after the break.

His rash challenge on a United striker when he was heading away from goal handed the away side a pen, which they converted to take the lead.

The home side levelled when Pollard was fouled in the box, but was quickly up to his feet to fire in.

Sports could’ve nicked it but George Friend’s effort bounced back off the post.

Pollard was their star man.

Sherburn grabbed their first league win of the season with a resounding 5-1 success on the road at Sleights Reserves.

Man of the match Liam Scott hammered in a clinical hat-trick, while striker Paul Mills grabbed a brace, one from the spot, as the away side cruised to the win.

Filey Town 3rds edged to a 1-0 home win against Fishburn Park Reserves.

The decisive goal for Brandon Milner’s side came on the stroke of half-time when Tim Chandler’s cross was headed in by Aaron Howard.

Both sides had their chances after the break, but Town held on for the 1-0 win.

Milner said: “We dominated the first half and the latter parts of the second too.

“Man of the match by an absolute mile was Lee Eblet, he was a rock at the back for us, but everyone played their part.”
