Scalby Football Club’s two teams both paid their respects to former president Ron Shield (pictured), who passed away this week.
The first team game against Athletico2B and their reserve side’s clash at Eastway Sports both fell silent prior to kick-off in memory of the village club’s past president, who lost a short battle with illness last week.
Ron’s son James said: “Although he wasn’t born in Scarborough, Dad loved the town, made many friends here and always thought of others before himself.”
Scalby secretary Phil Perry added: “Every sports club needs friendly, wise and experienced men to work behind the scenes and Scalby Football and Cricket Club have been lucky and privileged enough to have the honour of Ron Shield to be that man.”
Scalby manager Dan Gregory added: “It was a fitting way to honour a great club man.”
Shield’s funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday 21), at St Lawrence’s Church at 2pm.
