Scarborough sides ready for promotion push
Scarborough RUFC and Scarborough Athletic head into a crucial weekend in their respective promotion pushes.
Simon Smith's SRUFC side travel to Keighley hoping that a win would secure them second spot in Yorkshire One and a play-off clash for promotion against the runners up in Durham Northumberland One, while Steve Kittrick's Boro side need just one win from their last three games to secure promotion from the Evo-Stik Division One North, starting at Colne on Saturday.
Smith has told his side to ‘keep it simple and beat Keighley’ as they hunt down second spot and a promotion play-off.
It couldn’t be tighter in Yorkshire One, with three sides realistically in the hunt for second spot behind York.
If Scarborough beat Keighley in their final league game, they’ll be relying on Heath losing to Middlesbrough, who can also go second if Smith’s side lose out.
“It’s very simple, we need to put all the maths to one side and go and perform at Keighley and hope other results go our way,” said Smith.
“It’s fantastic to be challenging on two fronts at this stage of the season.
“I believed this squad had the ability to improve this season and we have managed to do just that.”
More of the same is the message from Boro boss Steve Kittrick as his side move into a vital trio of Evo-Stik North clashes.
Mathematically, Boro are now just a win away from sealing the best-third placed team across the divisions as they head into Saturday’s game at Colne.
Kittrick is showing little interest in that though - his heart is set on second, or even top spot.
“Ourselves, South Shields and Hyde all have hard games coming up over the next week or so, you don’t know what is going to happen,” he said.
“We want automatic promotion and nothing else, but to achieve that we just need to keep going as we are.
“It is all about getting results in our final three matches.”
