SUNDAY LEAGUE: Angel see off the challenge of valiant Valley side in 2-1 victory

In the only game to beat the weather, Dan Jones’ title chasers made it three wins from three league encounters with victory against a battling Valley side.

Angel were in control at the break as they went in 2-0 up.

Their first goal came when Kurtis Henderson applied the finishing touch to a flowing team move involving Dan Marston and Martin Cooper.

Their lead was soon doubled, Kurtis Henderson turning provider as he flicked a throw-in on to Cooper, who duly smashed into the top corner of the net.

Angel almost added to their lead but former Scarborough Athletic striker George Walmsley saw his effort cannon back of the post.

Athletic were then reduced to 10 men, goalkeeper Joe Wright given his marching orders after handling the ball outside his box.

Valley battled from start to finish and got on the scoresheet courtesy of man of the match Sam Westmoreland’s strike after he’d latched onto a superb through-ball from Tom Venner.

Angel held on to take the win though, much to the delight of Jones.

The Angel boss said: “We defended brilliantly towards the end of the game after going down to 10 men.

“Man of the match would have to be a collective team effort for keeping out a very lively and fit Valley side in the latter part of the game.”

Valley boss Ben Kristensen thought his side were unlucky to lose the match.

He said: “I thought we were unlucky to lose after dominating the majority of the match, but Angel had a more clinical edge.

“Sam (Westmoreland) was our man of the match after a tireless display in our midfield.”
