With Newlands having a game in hand against Commercial on Sunday and then the title rivals clashing a week on Sunday, Traf needed to take the three points against Pier.

Doubles from Sean Exley and Dean Craig made it 4-0 at half-time.

Pier fought back after the break and Phil Dickens slotted past player-manager Liam Salt to give his side hope.

But the home side weren't to be denied and Exley wrapped up his hat-trick to make it 5-1 before goals from Georgie Rose and Liam Vasey wrapped up the win for Traf.

Salt said: "We were excellent, that's probably the best we've played all season. We knew we needed to win."

Craig was Traf's man of the match and he scored the goal of the game, volleying into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Mikey Barker's Trafalgar Reserves side also hammered Scarborough Campus 9-1 to move within striking distance of winning the Division Two title.

Man of the match Martyn Ferrey put them ahead early on and later added a second, while second-half subs Danny Glendinning and Tom Scales added three and two goals respectively.

Al Wray also added a brace for Traf.
