The title races in both divisions of the Scarborough Sunday League looked to be heading to the wire before the decision to null and void all grassroots football was made by the FA.

Here we will look at how the action panned out over the second half of the season before it was halted.

DECEMBER

Sam Collin and Gary Hepples hit two goals each as Roscoes Bar claimed a crucial 6-2 home win against Division Two rivals Angel Reserves on December 1.

The only other two games played in December were a week later, as NRCFA Sunday Challenge Cup holders Angel lost out 2-1 at home to league rivals Newlands and Cayton lost out 5-4 at home to Tees Valley Tigers.

JANUARY

Danny Glendinning and Ryan Megginson hammered in four goals each as Trafalgar began 2020 with a bang thanks to an 8-0 Division One win at Cayton.

Castle Tavern won 3-2 at fellow Division Two strugglers Fylingdales thanks to Dan Blanchard’s hat-trick.

In the Kenward Cup, Angel won 5-1 at home to Eastfield Athletic and West Pier triumphed 5-2 at Angel Reserves.

Trafalgar continued their resurgence with a 4-1 league win at home to struggling Cayton and Brad Marshall’s treble guided Newlands to an 8-0 success at West Pier.

In Division Two, Angel Reserves earned a 3-1 home win against Saints, Roscoes Bar’s title hopes dipped after a 3-1 loss at Castle Tavern and Eastfield Athletic dug deep for a 3-2 home success against Fylingdales.

Traf’s third win of the month saw them earn a crucial 2-1 win at title rivals Angel a week later, Jack Hakings scoring a hat-trick as Newlands won 5-1 at Cayton and West Pier bounced back with a 4-3 win at home to Valley FC.

Tommy Day and Chris Milburn hit hat-tricks as Eastfield Athletic won 7-4 at home to Saints, George Hirst notching a treble for the away team.

Dave Welham’s treble helped Fylingdales to a 5-4 win in a thriller at Castle Tavern, Dan Blanchard scoring three times for the hosts.

In the final round of January fixtures, Angel Reserves earned a 3-1 win at Saints in Division Two.

In the FA Sunday Cup Angel won 2-1 at rivals Trafalgar to claim swift revenge for their league loss a week earlier.

Five goals from Zak Hansen saw Newlands storm to a 9-3 victory at West Pier, while Roscoes Bar won 2-0 at second divison rivals Castle Tavern.

Brad Rowley’s goal saw Newlands progress to the final four of the NRCFA Sunday Challenge Cup with a 1-0 home win against Sessay CC.

Angel Reserves won 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out after their Goalsports Trophy game at Roscoes Bar ended in a 4-4 draw

In the same competition, Saints defeated Eastfield Athletic 5-4 on penalties after the teams drew 1-1.

Sam Westmoreland’s double helped Valley FC return to winning ways, earning a 4-1 Division One success at Cayton in Division One.

After no games were played the following weekend, there was only one match on February 16, Newlands’ Zak Hansen and Ryan Link scoring two each in their 6-3 Division One win at Valley FC.

Jack Pinder’s double steered Angel Reserves to a 3-0 home win against second division title rivals Eastfield Athletic in the final round of February matches.

Danny Glendinning’s hat-trick helped Trafalgar to a 6-1 win at Newlands in the Kenward Cup.

Castle Tavern defeated Fylingdales 5-3 on penalties after the scores had been locked at 3-3, the final score was the same in the Cayton v Roscoes match and the latter side claimed a shoot-out 4-3 win at the Division One outfit to progress.

Only two matches were played on March 1, both in Division Two.

Saints won 4-2 at home to Fylingdales and Eastfield Athletic v Roscoes ended in a 3-3 draw.

A week later Newlands won 3-1 at Cayton in the Senior Cup.

Angel Reserves’ title hopes took a dive as they lost 5-0 at rivals Eastfield Athletic, while fellow high-flyers Roscoes Bar also slipped up with a 4-2 defeat at lowly Fylingdales and Saints drew 1-1 at home to Castle Tavern.

In midweek, in Division One, Angel earned a 3-1 triumph at home to Cayton.

The final round of games before the lockdown was March 15.

Newlands claimed a 2-0 win at Angel in Division One, while Trafalgar beat Valley 2-1 and Cayton claimed their first victory of the season, a 3-0 success at West Pier.

In Division Two, Eastfield Athletic defeated Castle Tavern 6-2, Angel Reserves won 3-2 at Fylingdales and Roscoes Bar earned a 6-3 triumph at Saints.
