Sunday League: Traf Reserves fly past Fylingdales and into Kenward Cup quarter-finals

Andy Noon and Col Jenkinson’s went ahead when Jamie Wray’s through-ball found Sean Thornton, who calmy slotted into the bottom corner.

Division one Fylingdales battled back into the contest in testing conditions and it was soon 1-1.

Jake Faichney punted a long free-kick up to Barry Heyes, who brought the ball down and slammed high into the net.

Dales soon led as they started to dominate proceedings against their lacklustre visitors as Heyes was brought down in the box and Lee Brennan slotted home the resulting penalty.

Scores were level at the break though after a defensive mix-up allowed Jamie Wray to nip in and make it 2-2.

Joint Traf boss Noon had strong words for his players during the interval and they duly responded when the second half got underway.

With Dales pressing for a crucial goal to retake the lead, Traf hit them on the counter-attack and Al Wray polished off the move to put his side 3-2 in front.

His brother Jamie then grabbed his second with the goal of the game as he audaciously chipped the Dales keeper from 30 yards when he had two teammates well-placed in front of goal.

Jamie Wray then completed his hat-trick when his brother Al was felled in the area and he banged in from the spot to round-off a hard-fought win for the second division side in tough conditions.

Noon said: “We were sloppy everywhere in the first half and I let the players know that at half-time. I’m usually not like that but we were awful in the first half.

“The second half was much better and we battered them really.

“It was a good team effort in horrendous conditions and I’m just glad to get it out of the way and get into the quarter-finals.

“I believe we can win it. After our first team and Newlands I believe we are the best team in the Sunday League, and the way we’re playing when we are in form is brilliant, so why not?”

Fylingdales skipper Tommy Gray conceded that Traf deserved their win, but pointed to the defensive error when 2-1 up that cost them dearly in the end.

Gray said: “It could’ve gone either way really, but the moment of madness at 2-1 when we were dominating cost us.
“We never showed up in the second half and they probably deserved to win it in the end.”

Jamie Agar and skipper Gray were the stand-out performers for Dales after their efforts in the first half.
