Tom hopes Boro have turned the Corner

It has been a rollercoaster campaign for both Boro and Corner, as neither have managed a consistent run of form.

But the frontman has rediscovered his shooting boots in recent games and that has helped to spark six quickfire points and a path through to the semi-final of the Doodson Sports Trophy.

Corner (pictured right) hit the net in Boro’s defeat of Carlton last week, he was then credited with two goals on Saturday against Kendal, though the first was clearly converted by midfielder Eddy Birch.

“I’m not saying too much about that, as a striker you claim any goal you can,” said the former Grimsby striker.

“I usually put my music on when I go in at half-time. I checked my phone and saw that I’d been given the goal, I suppose I was quite near it when the ball went in.”

This recent joy is a huge distance away from the frustrating dip that came before, as Boro slipped from the top spot towards the Evo-Stik North relegation zone.

Corner added: “It has been a really hard season compared to the one before.

“When I came to the club we were flying. I scored a couple on my debut and it went from there. Every time I went on the pitch I just wondered how many I was going to score.

“Things were all very optomistic during the first six games, but we had a couple of bad results, which affected me and the team.

“I had a confidence dip and I started to overthink things, which is what I do when things aren’t going well.

“Steve (Kittrick) came in as manager and I knew he rated me because he tried to sign me in the past.

“I was just trying too hard to impress him at the start because I wanted to prove myself to him.

“He has been great though, he just told me to relax and go and enjoy my football, which is something I’ve started doing again.”

Corner now has high aims for the remainder of the campaign.

He said: “I’m looking forward to Saturdays again now, which feels great.

“Personally, I feel for the fans because it has been a bad season.

“They keep turning up though and we have to thank them for that and finish this season properly.

“Our recent performance against Ossett Albion just wasn’t good enough, but the fans came over and clapped us off.

“Things like that are great when your football isn’t going well.

“We can pay them back for things like that because we still have league games left and we are in the semi-final of a cup.

“It would be great if we could pick up a bit of silverware to say thank you and give them something to cheer about.

“There is no reason why we can’t start pushing up that table as well.

“I now want to get back to scoring goals regularly.

“At the start of the season I said that I wanted to score 20 goals, I still think I can do that.

“I’m really enjoying playing up front with Ryan (Blott), we get on really well both on and off the field.

“You can see the little touches and runs are now coming off and I don’t see why we can’t both finish the season around the 20-goal mark.”
