Traf Reserves edge closer to title

Trafalgar Reserves took a step closer to the Sunday League Division Two title after beating Barrowcliff Reserves on Thursday evening.

The league leaders claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory, despite a below par display.

“We were diabolical, it’s the worst I’ve ever seen this team play,” player-boss Mike Barker reflected.

“The main thing is that we got the three points, however, and winning the league is still in our own hands.”

Tom Scales netted after 25 minutes to send Traf into half-time with a 1-0 lead.

Curtis Rose added a second after the resumption and Sam Pickard struck in the closing stages to round things off.

Traf’s cause was aided by title rivals First In Last Out dropping points when they were held to a 3-3 draw on the road at Roscoes Bar.

Phil Spencer headed home from a corner to put the Whitby side in front after 20 minutes but the hosts levelled almost immediately through Jamie Wray.

Roscoes took the lead after the interval when Jamie Wray picked out the bottom corner of the net to claim his second of the night.

Spencer was on target again to tie things up at 2-2 and although FILO saw plenty of the ball, it was the home side who grabbed the game’s next goal when Gary Hepples cut inside and smashed in.

Les Brown’s men made sure that they didn’t make the long trip back up the coastal road empty handed when Dan Brown equalised following a scramble in the box, despite claims for a foul on a Roscoes defender in the build-up to the goal.

Two-goal Spencer was named FILO’s man of the match.

Two second-half goals were enough to earn Newlands Reserves all three points from their trip to Alma.

Eric Hall volleyed home a Callum Myers cross to open the scoring before an own goal handed the away side a 2-0 advantage.

Newlands boss Liam Mintoff singled out centre-half Joe Hitchcock as his side’s star man.
