Wasps boost survival chances with magnificent seven

Division One’s bottom side got back to winning ways in style too, smashing seven past 10-man Cayton Corinthians.

Zac Hansen and Joe Watson both bagged braces as the Wasps dominated the first period to claim a 6-0 lead by half-time.

Ryan Matson also netted a free-kick and Joshua Beach grabbed his first goal for the club.

The Corinthians were much improved after the break and worked hard to keep their hosts at bay, Matson’s second of the game the only goal to be scored following the resumption.

“We put Cayton to the sword in the first 45, but full credit to them for how well they played after half-time, they made it really difficult for us,” Wasps’ player-boss Jamie Heritage said.

“This is a big result for us though, we’ve given ourselves a big chance of getting off the bottom of the table.

“We’re only a couple of points behind Whitby Fishermen, and three away from Sleights and we have them both to play at home before the end of the season.”

Right-winger Watson was named Westover’s man of the match.

Seamer Sports were another side to hit seven, as they came from behind to beat Whitby Fishermen away from home.

The hosts went 1-0 up early on, but Paddy Parke’s team were back on terms when Joe Gallagher netted in the 10th minute.

Jake Moore, playing up front rather than in his usual defensive role, put Seamer ahead, Gaz Lawton then making it 3-1 before half-time.

The village side registered three times in the opening 15 minutes of the second period, Moore striking again and Lawton completing his hat-trick.

A Fishermens defender then smashed the ball into his own net to round off the scoring in the 80th minute.

A satisfied Parke said: “We missed a few chances and should have scored a couple more, but this was a good performance.

“Alex Hamilton was superb in the centre of midfield, while Jake Moore did very well playing out of position up front.”

In Division Two, Mikey Hartnett scored five times as Scalby eventually came out on top of a 12-goal thriller at Cayton Corinthians Reserves.

Striker Hartnett (2) and Mark Vasey netted in the first period to send the Otters into half-time 3-2 up in new managers Danny Wedge and Sam Medd’s first game in charge.

The Corinthians began the second half in fine fashion however, turning the game on its head to grab a 5-3 lead, Tom Mackenzie-Fenwick with a hat-trick, Sam Williams and Jamie Sherlock the men on target.

Hartnett completed his treble to reduce the deficit to one goal before Vasey used his pace to work himself an opening, outmuscling Craig Garton and lashing home from 20 yards for 5-5.

The lethal Hartnett then struck twice more to earn his side all three points courtesy of a 7-5 scoreline.

Right-back Richard Simpson was Scalby’s man of the match, while Sherlock and Mackenzie-Fenwick shared the award for Cayton.

An 85th-minute goal from substitute Ryan Goodwoorth earned Falsgrave a point at Edgehill Reserves.

Benny Davis moved Edgehill ahead in the first half, but the visitors hit back after the interval through Konrad Sygitowicz.

The hosts were awarded a hotly-disputed penalty with 10 minutes to go, which player-boss Martyn Ferrey duly converted to hand his side a 2-1 lead.

It looked as if that strike would earn the home team all three points until sub Goodworth beat two defenders and rifled in with his left foot for 2-2.

Falsgrave boss Lee Smythe said: “I think a draw was the least we deserved, we created more on the whole and their penalty was very dubious.

“Paul Reddy had a great game in midfield, while Mark Reddy got through a lot of work playing as our lone striker.”

Newlands Reserves remain on track for the second division title after a 6-0 win over Duchess.

Stew Bates led the way with a treble, Drew McCoubrey weighing in with a brace and Kile Fields also getting his name on the scoresheet.
