Jack and Christian sparkle in York races

Eight members of Scarborough Athletic competed in the Millennium Bridge races, which consist of races in York on a scenic course around Rowntree Park, and on both sides of the River Ouse, with a crossing of Millennium Bridge.

In the five-kilometre ‘A’ race, Jack Robertson improved on his 2013 race third place when finishing as the runner up in 15 minutes 42 seconds.

He was followed by Andrew Fleming, who was 13th in 16 minutes and 39 seconds.

Both came close to their personal best times which they achieved recently at the Doncaster Town Centre races.

Shaun Tymon ran a personal best time of 20 minutes and 28 seconds, and booked his place in future A races when achieving a time well inside the qualifying mark.

In the B race, 12-year-old Christian Mummert made a most impressive distance and event debut, when leading the 121 strong field from start to finish, and his time of 19 minutes and 10 seconds was faster than 68 finishers in the A race.

David Field, Lynzie Fleming and Liz Kraft all achieved personal best times for a five-kilometre road event.

David clocked 22.38, Lynzie 24.44 and Liz 29.10.

Mick Thompson was second of the three over-70 runners in 32.32, which was a minute faster than his 2013 time for the race.

Three Scarborough AC members competed in the latest Sewerby Parkrun event.

The trio were led home by race winner Ryan Mancrief, who defied a strong coastal breeze to achieve a personal best time of 17 minutes 33 seconds, and his first event win after three runner-up and a third place finishes.

Up to the half way stage, Ryan was headed by a previous event winner Matthew Middleton, who had to settle for fifth spot overall of the 121 finishers in 18 minutes 53 seconds, and most notably just a few hours before getting married later in the day.

Mick Thompson clocked 32.33 which just a second slower than his time at the Millennium Bridge Race three days earlier, and was the second over-70 finisher behind Barnsley Harrier, John Hewitt, who set a new age group record of 24.30.

Scarborough Athletic Club’s ultra distance race specialists, Nikki Carr and Rich Buckle, competed in the annual Hell on the Humber 24-hour challenge event.

The runners had to complete as many four-mile laps as possible of the course, which was mostly on the Humber Bridge.

Nikki completed her target of 25 laps and thus a total of 100 miles in 23 hours and seven minutes, and was the first woman finisher and the third overall.

Her achievement was remarkable in that this was the second time in two weeks that she had completed a 100 miles distance race, and in the same event last year, she completed 52 miles.

Rich completed 22 laps and thus 88 miles, and was fifth overall and third male finisher.

Four members of Scarborough AC competed in the inaugural Berghaus Trail Chase races, which consisted of three separate courses in the North York Moors National Park over two days, with an overnight camp at Chop Gate.

Jane Hamp and Julie Clayton took on the challenge of the black route, a testing 21 miles with 3,000 feet of climb on day one, followed by 13 miles and a further 2,000 feet of climb on day two.

They finished as the fourth female team in a total time of 8 hours and 4 minutes.

Melanie Padgham and Dave Parke competed over the red route which had 2,500 feet of climb and 16 miles on day one and 1,800 feet and 12 miles on day two, in a total time of 6 hours and 39 minutes.
