Maffey earns Novice trophy in Paragon opener

The event included the first trophy of the season for the fastest novice rider, with members joining in the current or previous year who have not won any club events previously qualifying.

Thirteen riders took part, including four competing for the Novice Trophy.

Despite the conditions, there were some fast times with Darryl Maffey taking the trophy and second fastest overall in a personal best time of 59 minutes and seven seconds.

There were also personal bests for Jamie Ward, who improved by over three minutes to 1:01:05, and for Fred Smith (1:06:21).

Overall winner once again was Shaw Pickard with an excellent 58.07.

Steve Dodds completed the top three in 59.19, just missing a PB.

Other good rides came from Filey juvenile Cavan Walker, of Clifton CC, in 1:03:12 and Katy Cawthorne, of Richardsons CC, riding her first-ever 25-mile time-trial (1:25:09).

Junior rider Louise Scupham was also competing over 25 miles on Saturday, but further afield at Derby where she produced a good ride of 1:2:01 in very windy conditions, again beating ladies with much faster personal best times.

Richardsons Cycling Club’s first time trial of the season attracted 23 riders to the Yedingham circuit for a five-mile event.

Fastest home rider was Cavan Walker with a time of 12 minutes and 25 seconds, a superb time for a junior.

Second club rider was Jeff Francis in 12:57, third Dave Schubert with 13:22, earning him the handicap prize too.

Fastest time overall was by Rob Corney (Paragon) with 11:36, just beating Bob Hewitt (YH Training) by one second.

Karl Williamson and Pete Connelly rode as a pair and recorded a time of 10:52, with an average speed of 27 mph.

The event attracted six debutants and all recorded average speeds over 20mph, including two new members, junior rider James Robertson and Chris Clayton.

Rising star Will Palmer got his season off to a flyer with an average speed of 21mph.
