Mo remembered in superb fashion at Silver Royd

Players and supporters of Scarborough RUFC shook off Saturday’s disappointment and turned out in force on Easter Monday for the annual Andrew ‘Mo’ Stevenson memorial match, with Scarborough Gulls taking on a Klosters XV.

Before that the Scarborough ladies team, the Valkyries, took on their male counterparts in a game of tag rugby.

Despite the best efforts of Cathy Ann Myers’ charges and some dubious refereeing decisions, the men ran out comfortable winners.

The main event kicked off with several of the first XV on display as well as some ‘blasts from the past’, former captain Grant Lenton rolled back the years to play alongside son Joe and Bill Freeman showed footwork he never had during his playing days.

Klosters started the scoring through Rhys Howell, which prompted a swift response from the Gulls.

The game swung one way and then the other with Klosters holding a narrow lead at the break.

The second half went much the way of the first period with both sides running in tries.

Going into the final few minutes the Gulls held a slender lead and Klosters turned to club photographer Andy Standing to add some weight to their tiring pack, and his presence unnerved the Gulls.

First Jesse Macdonald, under pressure from the snapper, knocked on with the try line in sight and in the final minute the intimidating cameraman pressured the Gulls into a wayward pass, allowing Klosters to intercept and run the length of the pitch to steal victory.

With after match fundraising, a substantial amount was raised for St Catherine’s Hospice.
