SCARBOROUGH’S Michael Brown (JST Gas Gas) secured a career-best fifth place on day two at the Japan round of the World Trials Championship.
A rare clutch issue on day one put Gas Gas number one rider Brown in ninth place.
This was soon sorted by ‘stand-in’ minder Jack Lee but the damage had already been done which allowed two Japanese riders to get between Loris Gubian and Brown.
The former Scalby School student soon bounced back on the second day when conditions were hard with the overnight and continuing rain throughout the day.
His fifth place was 14 marks better than Fumitaka Nozaki in sixth.
Gubian finished eighth.
His superb performance lifts Brown to seventh in the overall Championship with just the final WTC weekend in France remaining in two weeks time.
The fight is most definitely on because the points situation is close for sixth, seventh and eighth in the Championship.
Gubian is now in sixth on 74 points, Brown seventh on 71 points and James Dabill eighth on 69.
