Christine earns cup success at North Cliff

The North Cliff Golf Club ladies competed in the Marisa Cup in the very difficult bogey format.

At the end of play two ladies Christine Toulson (pictured above) and Margaret Germaine were tied at minus 3, both completed the front nine at minus 3 and then came back level.

The back six countback went in Christine’s favour by plus one to level.

Well played to both ladies and also to Maria Abbott, who was in close contention at minus 4.

The South Cliff ladies played their Medal 7 on July 15, the silver division winner was Ann Eley with a nett 72 on the back nine from second Kate Owen also on nett 72, Gloria Pickering came in third on nett 73; Bronze 1, 1st Maureen Jamieson nett 76 (back nine) second Gill Skingle nett 76 and third Glenis Hoskins nett 78; Bronze 2, first Sue Cockill nett 74, second Ann Wrigglesworth nett 77 and third Elizabeth Ricketts nett 79.

On Friday July 17 an interesting “All Irons” competition was organised when the players could only take out iron clubs, (no rescue or hybrids allowed), the format was stableford.

The winner Claire Thompson (25) posted a very creditable 32 points and the runner-up Gloria Pickering (13) 30 points.

North Cliff ran a shotgun am-am medal competition on Sunday morning timed to finish as the leaders of the Open Championship teed off at Hoylake.

As a result the pace of play was brisk and everyone was back in the clubhouse in good time for the Rory McIlroy show.

The local scoring was every bit as good as the Open with the winners, Dave Foster (28), Jez Pratt (23), Adrian Owenson (25) and Andy Clyde (14) chalking up an impressive 18-under-par total of 126.

One shot behind in second place were Rowan Evans (15), Shaun Lofthouse (26), Colin Ireland (16) and Trevor Marshall (26) on 127.

Third spot went to Roger Groombridge (10), Mike Tighe (13), Lucca Massucci (9) and Lance Harland (17) who finished on 128. Steve Pybus (1), Chris Smith (0), Dave Ellard (7) and Alan Pickard (12) took fourth prize on a countback over the last six holes from Paul Wiffen (10), Nigel Hird (12), Steve Watts (14) and Steve Timmins (17).
