Fylingthorpe’s Paul Dixon claimed the North of England Championship for the eighth time.

The event for the coveted Wilkinson Sword Trophy took place at The Kings Arms, Wolviston. Sixty four players from the various leagues across the area took part in ideal conditions.

By the quarter final stages, holder Ian Carr, Ugthorpe and one of the favourites, Shaun Turner of Croft, had already exited.

James Inglis, Mickleby lost out to John Loader, Lazenby, while Fylingthorpe’s Mike Mendelsohn saw off Paul Welford, Ugthorpe.

Dixon, who works in Scarborough, defeated last year’s runner-up Steve Bainbridge, Barnard Castle. In the semis Loader lost 21-16 to Richard Watson, Croft while Dixon beat his Fylingthorpe team-mate Mendelsohn 21-6.

This set up what looked to be a close call final but that was soon dispelled as Dixon completely outplayed his rival, winning in convincing style 15-2, 15-1.

This was Dixon’s second competition win in two days after beating Brian Mould, Ugthorpe / Danby in the Fylingthorpe Open for the Jack Bailey Trophy.
