TOP Scarborough swimming prospect Gareth Mills has received a call-up to the Great Britain squad for the European Juniors in Serbia, following an excellent performance at the British Championships in Manchester.

Mills, who swims for Scarborough Swimming Club, competed in six races over eight days at the championships, and performed superbly to reach the semi-final of the 100 metre freestyle, guaranteeing him a spot on the plane to Serbia in July.

Seventeen-year-old Gareth was delighted with his performance at the championships in Manchester.

He said: “It was a great experience for me at the British Championships.

“It was definitely my best achievement to date in swimming and I enjoyed being in Manchester.

“I was there for eight days and stayed with the City of Leeds swimmers.

“I was quite nervous because it was a big championship and I’d put a lot of time into training for it. But nerves can be a good thing.

“I now have the chance to go and swim at the europeans in Serbia, which will be another great challenge and another great experience for me.”

Mills is also travelling to Majorca, Spain in April for a training camp with the City of Leeds swimmers, and is also in line to swim at the European Junior Open Water Championships in Eilat, Israel at some point this year.

Mills added: “It’s a busy schedule and you have to be dedicated but I’m looking forward to going abroad to swim in these championships.

“If I do well in Serbia I have the chance to go and swim at the World Youth Championships in Lima, Peru. So that would be another great opportunity for me.”

Mills was quick to sing the praises of his coach at Scarborough, Sam Greetham.

Greetham has worked with Mills for a number of years now and his hard work is showing signs of paying off, and Mills is grateful for the efforts his coach has put in.

He added: “Sam always said we had the potential to make it to a high level in the sport and I’m pleased that we’re repaying the faith he showed in us.”
