EASTFIELD Bowling Club’s Ian and Jan Hadden formed a great partnership when they were drawn together in the Hunmanby drawn pairs merit competition on Sunday, battling their way to the final.
Thirty six players took part in six groups of three pairs, with the group winners and the two highest runners-up going into the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals, Hunmanby’s Neil Ledingham and Harvey Stockdale beat Dukes Park’s Pete Richards and Peter Van de Gevel 21-15, Alan Landers (Whitby) and Pete Thompson (Hunmanby) beat Keith Gardam (Dukes Park) and Ed McCormack (North Cliff) 21-17, the Haddens beat Pat Germaine (North Cliff) and Alan Kynaston (Hunmanby) 21-11 and Joyce Smith (Westgate) and Phil Todd (Hunmanby) beat Ray Leeman (Whitby) and Steve Freer (Hunmanby) 21-19.
The semi-finals resulted in a 21-19 win for Ledingham and Stockdale against Landers and Thompson and a 21-15 win for the Haddens against Smith and Todd.
An exciting final saw Leddingham and Stockdale scrape home 21-20 against the Haddens.
A singles merit will be held at Westgate BC on Sunday, 9am start.
The remaining winter merits will be held at Borough BC, a singles merit on Feb 20, a singles at North Cliff on Feb 27, a singles at Whitby on March 6, and a drawn pairs at Eastfield on March 13.
The 2010-11 winter series Champion of Champions will be played at Whitby BC on March 20.
Competition secretaries of the nine clubs in membership of the Scarborough and District Crown Green Bowling Association are now taking bookings for the summer merit competitions, which will begin with the traditional drawn triples at Whitby BC on March 27 with a 9.30am start.
