Landers shuts out Gates at Park event

SUNDAY saw 40 of the area’s keenest crown green bowlers take part in the Westgate BC singles merit, with Dukes Park’s Andy Deighton emerging as a worthy winner.

In the quarter-finals, Deighton beat Whitby’s Kevin Gates 21-18, while David Lowe (Dukes Park) beat Hunmanby’s Phil Todd 21-17, Peter van de Gevel (Dukes Park) beat Eastfield’s Kevin Garside 21-14 and North Cliff’s Pat Germaine beat clubmate John Cooper 21-20.

At the semi-final stage Deighton beat Lowe 21-17 and van de Gevel beat Germaine 21-13, with Deighton going on to a 21-11 victory against van de Gevel in the final.

A consolation tea-and-biscuits competition attracted 19 early-round losers and in the quarter-finals Alan Landers (Whitby) beat Danny Cooper (North Cliff) 21-12, Alan Bambrook (Dukes Park) beat Tommy Donald (Westgate) 21-18, Mick Gates (Borough) beat Betty Wild (Hunmanby) 21-13 and Keith Gardam (Dukes Park) beat Barry Gosling (Borough) 21-16.

In the semi-finals, Landers beat Bambrook 21-10 while Gates beat Gardam 21-19. Landers powered to a 21-7 victory against Gates in the final.

On Sunday there will be a singles merit at Borough BC 9am start.
