A clash of the two big guns on the Scarborough crown green bowls circuit added to the excitement of the Royal Tandoori-sponsored North Cliff BC singles merit competition on Sunday.
Andy Deighton and David Lowe are both members of Dukes Park BC, Bridlington.
In March Lowe won the 2012-13 winter Champion of Champions playoff and since then has been runner-up in the Whitby BC singles merit and winner of the Borough BC pairs when partnered by Geoff Watson (Whitby).
In the past few weeks Deighton has won the Hunmanby pairs merit with Dukes Park clubmate Chris Bielby and won the Whitby singles, the Dukes Park singles and the Bridlington Bay men’s singles merit competitions.
The North Cliff event on Sunday started on a misty morning but the 64 players enjoyed late afternoon sunshine.
In the quarter-finals Paul Morgan (Doncaster) beat Dennis O’Neill (Dukes Park) 21-19, Danny Cooper (North Cliff) beat club-mate Robert Child 21-15, Andy Deighton beat Derrick Swift (North Cliff) 21-20 and David Lowe beat club-mate Leigh Deighton 21-18.
The semi-finals produced the exciting clash of Andy Deighton and Lowe, with the latter taking the honours 21-18 while Morgan beat Cooper 21-18.
Lowe ran out a 21-16 winner in the final against Morgan.
The Hunmanby Over-60s singles merit on Friday was played in miserable, cold conditions and attracted only 40 entries.
With five on the card to speed up the finish, North Cliff’s Derrick Swift ended as winner with clubmate Richard Thompson runner-up.
Tomorrow there will be an over-60s singles merit at Westgate BC, Bridlington, with a 10am start and on Sunday there will be a doubles round-robin competition at Whitby BC, 9.30am start.
