SPECTATORS who braved the bitter cold on Sunday saw a clash of champions in the final of the North Cliff BC singles merit competition - three-times Champion of Champions Geoff Watson versus current champion David Lowe.
Forty-four players took part and in the quarter-finals Watson (Whitby) beat North Cliff’s Danny Cooper 21-15, Whitby’s Kevin Gates beat his father, Mick Gates (Borough) 21-19, Andrew Deighton (Dukes Park) beat Keith Gardham (Hunmanby) 21-19 and Lowe (Dukes Park) beat Steve Bell (Borough) 21-16.
At the semi-final stage Watson beat Kevin Gates 21-17 while Lowe beat Deighton 21-15 in the other half of the draw.
Watson never really got into his stride in the final and Lowe’s consistency earned him a deserved 21-11 victory.
Twenty-two of the main competition’s early losers entered a tea-and-biscuits consolation event and in the quarter-finals of this Russell Hipgrave (Dukes Park) beat Colin Burns (North Cliff) 21-16, Terry Summersgill (Borough) beat Mick Dawson (Eastfield) 21-13, Ian Richardson (Whitby) beat Dave Moment (North Cliff) 21-11 and Phil Todd (Hunmanby) beat Bob Walker (Borough) 21-19.
Summersgill beat Hipgrave 21-14 in the semis while Todd beat Richardson 21-20.
In a ding-dong final Todd beat Summersgill 21-19.
