Promoter Frank Maloney, who retired from the sport last night, has pointed to the injury suffered by Scarborough’s Paul Ingle in 2000 as the night he started to fall out of love with boxing.

Scarborough’s featherweight world champion Ingle was almost fatally injured following his defeat to South African Mbulelo Botile back in December 2000.

Ingle has never fully recovered from the injuries he suffered that night when he lost his IBF world strap and his career was cruelly cut short, and Maloney admits that was the beginning of the end of his association with the sport.

“When I reflect back I honestly believe I started falling out of love with boxing when Paul suffered his accident,” Maloney said last night.
