Rhodes and Atkinson beat Germans

SCARBOROUGH ABC’s Mathew Atkinson and Westway boxer George Rhodes both claimed victories for Yorkshire in a representative match against a German Select team at Woodseats ABC in Sheffield.

Lightweight Atkinson was up against Conor Lain in his bout, and the Scarborough lad proved to be much too strong for the German, winning the fight with a unanimous points decision.

Seventeen-year-old Atkinson boxed at long-range in the opening two rounds, and started to step up his punching towards the end of the second.

In the third round Atkinson hit Lain with some potent right-hand shots and then a left-hook winded the German teenager, leaving the judges with little option but to award the bout to Atkinson.

His club coach John Brownlie said: “This was Mathew’s best display of the season so far, he is looking in very good form at the moment.”

Nineteen-year-old welterweight Rhodes was involved in a much closer bout, winning on a very close points decision against Slawa Sdomer.

The strong German started very brightly and took the fight to Rhodes.

The Westway ace’s slick footwork and good jabs kept him out of trouble, and at the end of the second round he started to score very well with his left hook.

Rhodes’ superior fitness kept the German at bay in the third and final three-minute round and this helped him secure the win against a very experienced German boxer with more than 60 fights to his name.

The two wins by the Scarborough-based fighters helped the Yorkshire team to victory on the night.

Rhodes is hoping to return to action next month when his club put on a show at the Crown Spa Hotel on Friday March 11.
