You may find it hard to believe that badminton is statistically the second most popular sport in the world behind football.

According to the coaches at Scalby Junior Badminton Club, John Colley and Simon Burnley, the numbers of people young and old taking up the sport is in decline.

A sport that I used to play at school regularly, badminton is no longer part of the physical education curriculum according to John and Simon.

That is surprising as it is a sport that doesn’t cost a lot to play, is great for keeping fit and healthy.

We turned up at Scalby School expecting very much what we found. The level of coaching was superb, with John and Simon interacting well with the youngsters and taking them through several drills before they enjoyed some games at the end of the session.

I took on Martin and managed to beat him, but soon came a cropper when I foolishly decided to take on John, who was almost toying with me.

Badminton is a great sport for kids and adults alike, and Martin and I recommend it.
