With an entry of 55, Eastfield BC’s Singles Merit competition turned into a nine-hour marathon - fortunately on a sunny day.

The popular event was run by Kevin Garside and Les Craggs, along with club helpers, and Eastfield BC’s president Moira Audsley expressed thanks and presented the prizes after the conclusion of the competition.

At the quarter-finals stage Borough’s battling Rita Bland bowed out to Alan Landers (Whitby) 21-19, John Cooper (North Cliff) beat Colin Rodda (Borough) 21-15, Kenny Wale (Whitby) beat David Lowe (Dukes Park) 21-16 and Phil Todd (Hunmanby) beat Ian Richardson (Whitby).

Cooper beat Landers 21-14 in the semis while Todd scraped through 21-20 with a last-gasp come-back against Wale.

It was the fifth success of the day for both finalists.

With two start on the card Cooper took the first two ends to establish a 4-2 lead over Todd and never dropped behind, leading 8-6, 11-8, 15-13 before clinching it 21-16.

Westgate BC’s Les Boyles battled through several tough games to finish with a 21-9 victory in the final against Dukes Park’s Dave Clark and take first prize in the Bridlington Bay Over-60s Singles Merit.

Tomorrow Dukes Park BC will stage its Over-60s Mixed Doubles Merit and on Sunday there will be the Hospital Cup final at Hunmanby BC, both 10am start.

Latest Gambart Baines Challenge Cup qualifiers are David Fisher (Wakefield), who beat A West (Sheffield) 21-20, and Andy Farmer (Sheffield), who beat Scott Fisher (Wakefield) 21-18.
