WESTGATE Bowling Club attracted 40 entries for its Over-60s Singles Merit competition on Friday, a day when the weather looked threatening but the rain held off all day.
There were several close games in the early rounds, including Terry Summersgill (Borough) 21-19 over Dave Moment (North Cliff), Dennis O’Neill (Dukes Park) 21-19 against Rita Bland (Borough), Leo Graves (Bridlington Bay) 21-20 against Dick Thompson (N Cliff), Colin Burns (N Cliff) 21-19 against clubmate Pat Germaine, Jim Ash (Westgate) 21-18 against Jean Roscoe (Brid Bay) and Tony Thornton (Dukes Pk) 21-19 against Tommy Donald (Westgate).
In the quarter-finals Dennis O’Neill beat John Lawson (Brid Bay) 21-20, Swift beat Pete Richards (Hunmanby) 21-12, Peter van de Gevel (Dukes Pk) beat clubmate Ron Marshall 21-19, and Sue O’Neill (Dukes Pk) beat Thornton 21-13.
In the semis Swift beat Dennis O’Neill 21-5 while Van de Gevel beat Sue O’Neill.
Swift looked to be heading for an easy win in the final when he raced to a 15-9 lead at the 12th end. Van de Gevel then started to catch up and at the 20th end was just one shot behind on 18-19. Swift held his nerve and scored on the last two ends to win 21-18.
Westgate president Peter Hellawell made the presentations to semi-finalists and finalists.
