Scarborough Athletic have forged a knockout link with the Hull-based Paul Ingle Boxing Academy.
On Tuesday nightBoro’s squad and management team paid a visit to the gym, which is named after Scarborough’s biggest boxing hero.
Owner Sonny Pollard, a big friend of Ingle, and trainer Lee Stevenson put the lads through their paces to boost their fitness levels ahead of Saturday’s Evo-Stik North outing at Burscough.
Former professional boxer Pollard said: “I was surprised by their levels of fitness, they all worked really hard.
“When teams come down to the gym you usually get one or two who don’t want to be there, walking around and not getting involved. The good thing was that none of the lads did that, they were all motivated.
“This link is good for everyone. It is great for us, great for Paul (Ingle) because he loves his football and we are getting him back in the public eye, and it is great for the team, who had a good session.”
Boro’s joint-boss Paul Foot added: “We would like to say a big thank-you to Sonny and everyone at the Paul Ingle Academy for helping us out.
“It was a very hard session, but the great thing is that nobody shirked it.
“All the lads have all been really excited about coming down and giving it a go.
“Since then they have all been texting and tweeting each other about it.
“The session was great for team bonding, especially as we had a couple of new players down in Danny Wilkinson and Tom Corner.”
Foot added: “The lads are all keen to continue with this link-up, a lot of them have already been talking about going to the gym as a regular thing.
“We are also hoping to welcome Sonny, Paul (Ingle) and any of the other lads from the gym down to a game.”
