Young Scarborough and Pickering athletes shine in friendly event

Forty young athletes from Scarborough and Pickering Athletic Clubs took part in a friendly Intra Club Track and Field competition on the playing fields of Lady Lumley’s School Pickering.

What has become an annual fixture organised by the club coaches, is designed to give the younger athletes some experience of athletics in much the same way as the City of York Summer League, except that neither club has any dedicated track and field facilities, so the events at the school were staged on grass.

The events were divided into age groups ranging from under-11 to under-17, and the largest entry was in the under-11 which had 16 competitors, many of whom were competing for the very first time in their events for their clubs.

The overall girls winner was Isabel Louth who led the field with a winning Standing Jump and 150 metres, and was third in the Shot.

The leading overall boys were Nathan David and Tommy Wright. Nathan won the Standing Long Jump and was second in the Turbo Javelin and 60 metres, while Tommy was first in the Turbo Javelin and was second in both the Standing Long Jump and 150 metres.

In the under-13 boys events, the overall winner was Maurice Carlton-Seal.

The Pickering Town FC Under-14 striker won the 800 metres and was second in the Javelin and Long Jump.

There were also some excellent winning performances by Oliver Hamond and Alexander Kobylica.

Oliver won the Long Jump and 75 metres, while Alexander won the Javelin competition with an amazing throw of over 15 metres

Just three under-13 girls competed at this meeting, and as all three won an event, they shared the Overall Winner Award.

Molly Cooper won the Javelin, Evie Wright the 75 metres and Mhairi Maxwell took care of the Long Hump.

The Overall winner of the boys under-15 was guest athlete, Tom Flatters of the City of York Athletic Club.

Tom normally competes in the under-13 division, but as a reigning Yorkshire Long Jump champion was promoted to the higher age group.

He duly won his top event the Long Jump and was also first in the 100 metres and Javelin.

Also in the Long Jump, Jack Colbeck achieved a significant personal best as the runner up.

There were joint winners in the girls under-15 group, with Abigail Pollard and Chloe Riley sharing the overall points total.

Abigail won the 200 metres and Long Jump and was third in the Javelin.

Chloe won both the Javelin with a big personal best and also the Long Jump.

She was also the runner-up in the 200 metres.

In the under-17 age group, there were no girls at the meeting.

The winner of the boys division was Kawsar Ahmed, who is still recovering from an injury sustained when competing in the Olympic Stadium in a pre-Games event.

Kawar won the Long Jump and Javelin and was third in the 100 metres.
