High-flying Bird gets off to a perfect start

Thirty-three-year-old Bird, who works as a childcare officer, competed as a trials rider for 20 years, but injury forced him to retire eight years ago.

The rider said: “Racing is something I always wanted to do and after a long spell away from trials biking I thought now was the time to give it a go.

“I was competing in the Auto 66 Club Northern Clubman Championship and in my opening race I was doing well, competing for the lead when my battery failed and I had to retire.

“After that I went on to win my remaining three races, to take the lead in the lightweight class. I was chuffed to bits to make such a great start.

“My main aim was to try and force my way into a podium finish in one of the races so I was over the moon to win three and take the lead in my class.”

Bird, who was riding a VFR 400 NC30, added: “I started as a trials rider when I was only five years old and took part in lots of events, including the British Championships, until injury forced me to quit around eight years ago.”

The Seamer rider will be aiming to continue his fine form when the championship resumes at Cadwell Park next month.
