Scarborough’s John Fuller stars for Yorkshire in National Over-60s Padel Championship

Scarborough’s John Fuller represented Yorkshire in the National Over-60s padel tennis county championships in Bristol, playing in the men’s and mixed doubles.

In a busy schedule the Yorkshire mixed team progressed from their pool, won their semi-final but fell short of taking the silverware when they were defeated by Gloucestershire in the final.

The first game for the men saw them play Lancashire, Fuller and Mick Barrowclough won their rubber while Simon Bickerton and Steve Smith suffered a loss. In the 10 point shoot-out Fuller and Bickerton came back from 5-1 down to win 10-7.

Yorkshire then beat South Wales 2-0, then came favourites Durham/Cleveland.

Captain Jon Sowden (Rawdon) and Barrowclough lost 2-0 while Fuller and Neil Baldwin stood at 1-1 taking their game to a tie-break set. The Yorkshire pair were soon 5-1 down and lost the match 2-1 as the team were eliminated by the eventual champions.
