Perfect timing for Ben as takes reins at Scarborough CC

Ben Elvidge admits he's taking over as captain of Scarborough Cricket Club's first team at the perfect time as they prepare for life in the new Yorkshire Premier League.

Elvidge has taken over as first-team captain from his dad Neil, who was skipper last season, as the club embark on their maiden campaign in the Premier League North, aiming for a dream end-of-season trip to Abu Dhabi for the Premier League final.

The new skipper said: “It’s a massive honour for me to take over at a club like Scarborough with all the history and the best ground in the league as well.

“To take over from my dad makes it even more special.

“I’ve followed in his footsteps on a number of occasions, first at Flixton, then Yeadon in the Bradford League, playing for the same club in Sydney and now captaining Scarborough.

“It was an honour to be asked and it didn’t take me long to make my mind up.”

Scarborough have been placed in a very strong Premier League North division alongside Yorkshire County Cricket Club (formerly Yorkshire Academy), big-spending York, York League winners Sheriff Hutton Bridge, previous National Village Knockout victors Woodhouse Grange and seven other sides.

The winners of the North and South divisions will do battle at North Marine Road, with the Bradford League and North Yorkshire/South Durham champions playing at Headingley on September 17.

Both victors will then fly out to Abu Dhabi to contest the final at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on October 27.

Elvidge knows it will be a tough ask to get to the day/night final in Abu Dhabi, but he’s confident his side can compete in the re-formed set-up.

“The North Premier Division is probably the strongest division Yorkshire has seen.

“There are some really strong clubs and a lot who have splashed the cash and invested heavily in their sides.

“We are going in a slightly different direction to those in that we’re trying to attract the best local players to come and enjoy their cricket here.

“We have the best pitch in the league by a long, long way and we have a strong batting line-up, so we shouldn’t be getting bowled out very often at home, if at all.

“If we can remain consistent then who knows, but it will certainly be a tough ask.

“It’s a great idea though. We will finally know who the best club side in Yorkshire are.”

Scarborough open their season on the road at Driffield on Saturday April 16.
