Pirates slip to defeat in the searing heat

An understrength Scarborough Pirates team lost out by a 36-26 scoreline against Kippax in the Yorkshire Men’s premier division.

Despite beating Kippax at Estway earlier this season, the Pirates immediately found themselves up against it, as they only had one sub available in the searing Leeds heat.

They were able to welcome back a strong Dan Stanley and Ali Sutton into the the side, and despite the lack of numbers they stuck together superbly as a unit.

Kippax struck first, but in tradition Pirates fashion they found some fire in their bellies, which allowed them to respond quickly with a try of their own.

The Pirates continued to battle hard, but the heat and the lack of numbers proved hard to contend with and they trailed by two tries at the interval.

There was more Pirates’ fight in the second half, with centre Matty Young and player-coach Adam Lee producing stand-out quality.

Tempers began to flare in the heat, seeing Pirates’ Jack Hakings and a Kippax man sent to the sin-bin for 10 minutes.

Sadly the tries of Jack Johnson, Billy Parker, Lee, Young and Tom jenkinson, linked with the conversions of Jack Hakings and Sam Hakings were not enough.

Man of the match went to Lee for his work rate, intensity and desire to soldier on.
