Plucky Pirates edged out by West Hull

The Pirates were looking for their first win since stepping up into the premier division, and welcomed back Jack Hakings, who has had a superb season for Newlands Park in both Saturday and Sunday Leagues, to the side.

Both teams came out with an eager attitude, deadlocked at 0-0 for the first 20 minutes.

The Pirates struck first, with full-back Harry Sleep running a well-timed option runner to hit a gap with an unchallenged 10 metres to touchdown.

Millward failed to convert.

West Hull dug deep to find themselves 7-4 up at the half-time break, after using the wind well to really challenge Scarborough’s wingers and full-back.

Both teams came back out after the interval with a point to prove now, both desiring a win.

Forward Dan Stanley provided two great tries to put the West Hull side on the back foot.

The basics were not coming together for the hosts though and a the visitors took full advantage of a few fortunate to go 19-16 up.

Exceptional work and desire wasn’t quite enough, as the finishing 12-man Pirates could not hold out the Hull outfit.

The hosts’ stand-out players were Matty Young, Nicky Brining and man of the match Dave Douthwaite.
