Action from Yorkshire v Lancashire at Silver Royd

The result may have not been the right one, as Yorkshire slipped to a 40-27 defeat against Lancashire, but Scarborough CEO Graeme Young was still delighted with the day

Just shy of 1,500 rugby fans flowed through the doors at Silver Royd to take in some excellent action in the sunshine.

Former Scarborough man Darren Fearn also made his county debut for Yorkshire to add to the local interest.

Young said: “We were hoping for closer to 2,000 fans on the day because the weather was good, but it was still an excellent day.

“There were hundreds of kids in the ground to watch the game. They are the future of the game in this town and Yorkshire, so that was also very nice to see.

“The game was slightly a little underwhelming because Lancashire maybe had that little bit too much, but big changes have been made in the Yorkshire set-up and hopefully they will bear fruit in the future.

“It was also nice to see Darren making his debut, that was a good local link that bought in a lot more interest.

“We have had a lot of good feedback from the game and our organisation, which is always good to hear.

Having hosted four county matches in five years, Scarborough RUFC are already laying out their plans for 2017.

Young added: “We like the Roses games, but I doubt we’ll get another one of those for a couple of years, but we’ve now hosted four county games, which says a lot for the club.

“If we are looked at for another Roses game in the future then we’ll definitely be going to town on it to make it a great spectacle for the town.

In Scarborough there is such a diversity of sport, but there isn’t much from a higher level.

“Scarborough CC host Yorkshire on a regular basis and we want to do the same to bring on rugby in the town.”
