SCARBOROUGH’s Darren Fearn is looking forward to stepping up his charge for a regular first team berth after signing an improved contract with Aviva Premier League side Newcastle Falcons.

Prop Fearn made great strides last season, making his first-team bow in an Amlin Cup match in France, before breaking into the side against Leicester at Welford Road.

Now Fearn, 22, is looking to make his mark in the first team and to hold down a regular starting spot after agreeing terms on a new contract.

Fearn attract interest from other clubs following Newcastle’s last-gasp escape from the relegation battle in the Premiership, but the former Scarborough Sixth Form pupil is keen to stay with the Kingston Park club, who signed him after impressing for the Northumbria University side.

Fearn said: “I’ve just signed a new deal with the club and I’m really looking forward to next season and pushing on again.

“I had a good season, managed to break into the side and get some games under my belt.

“Playing in France was a great experience and then to play at Leicester was brilliant, and it has all helped my progress.

“The club have helped me out, I am learning loads and I’m getting good feedback from people at the club.

“Obviously to be offered an improved contract is great and I’m hoping to kick on next year now and hopefully I’ll be involved a lot more often with the first team.”

Fearn was also quick to thank the people at Scarborough RUFC who helped him progress in his earlier years.

He said: “I’d like to say thanks to the likes of Junior Tupai, Mike Holder and my dad, who all helped me when I was starting out in rugby.”

Falcons head coach Alan Tait said: “It is important to keep players like Darren at the club as we look to move forward.”
